Matt Fitzpatrick Redeems Players Heartbreak With Valspar Championship Win

Redemption stories do not get much better than this. One week after bogeying the final hole at TPC Sawgrass to lose The Players Championship to Cameron Young, Matt Fitzpatrick flipped the script at the Valspar Championship, making a clutch birdie on 18 to win by one shot over David Lipsky.

Fitzpatrick finished at 11-under 273 at Innisbrook Resort’s Copperhead Course in Palm Harbor, Florida, claiming $1,638,000 from the $9.1 million purse and his first PGA Tour title in nearly three years since his 2023 RBC Heritage victory.

Closing the Deal

The victory was sealed by a 13-footer for birdie on the par-4 18th — almost poetic given that it was a bogey on a closing par-4 the previous week that had cost him The Players. Fitzpatrick’s composure on the final green showed a player who had processed the disappointment and channeled it into determination.

Sungjae Im’s Collapse

Sungjae Im had led through 54 holes and appeared poised for a wire-to-wire victory. But a disastrous Sunday front nine — four bogeys in his first ten holes — dropped him from contention, and he finished tied for fourth at 8-under. The collapse opened the door for Fitzpatrick, who walked through it with authority.

For Fitzpatrick, the Valspar win is a reminder of his exceptional talent and mental resilience. The 2022 U.S. Open champion had endured a frustrating stretch without victories, and breaking through again at Innisbrook sets him up for a confident run through the rest of the spring season.
