LIV Golf Makes African Debut: Inside the First Event at Steyn City

LIV Golf has expanded its global footprint to a new continent. The LIV Golf South Africa event, held March 20-22 at The Club at Steyn City in Johannesburg, marked the tour’s first-ever event on African soil — and by all accounts, it was a resounding success.

The Venue

The Club at Steyn City provided a world-class setting for LIV Golf’s African debut. Located in northern Johannesburg, the course offered the kind of dramatic landscapes and challenging holes that make for compelling tournament golf. The facilities impressed players and fans alike, with many calling it one of the best venues on the 2026 LIV Golf calendar.

Fan Engagement

South African golf fans turned out in force to see the world’s biggest names compete on home soil. The atmosphere was electric, particularly around the South African-linked Southern Guards team, who carried the hopes of local fans throughout the weekend before narrowly losing the team competition to DeChambeau’s Crushers by a single stroke.

A Growing Global Tour

The African expansion is part of LIV Golf’s strategy to bring professional golf to new markets around the world. With events already established in Asia, the Middle East, Europe, the Americas, and Australia, the addition of Africa fills one of the last remaining gaps in the tour’s global calendar. For the sport of golf, having a major professional tour playing events across six continents can only be positive for growing the game worldwide.
