TWO WINS IN A ROW and three wins in the last month. Yes, indeed. “Vijay” does mean victory.
Singh carded a blistering 63 in yesterday’s final round to run away with the Deutsche Bank Championship in Norton, Massachusetts. And he opened a wide lead in the 2008 FedEx Cup points race.
It was win No. 34 for the Fijian and No. 22 since turning 40. Always a solid ball striker, the hot streak can be credited to a dramatic reversal of fortunes with the putter. On Monday, Vijay rolled in about a mile of putts to separate himself from the pack.
In the post-tournament media conference, Singh explained how the putting turnaround began in Akron at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.
“So winning that, making the last putt at Akron told me a lot, told me that I needed to change some kind of an attitude or change my putting style,” Vijay said. “If I kept doing that, I don’t think I would have − I could make it anymore. It was hard just putting.
“So I went back home and just a good attitude change. I spoke to some psychologist that was trying to help me. Deep down it has to come from me. I mean, whatever they can tell me, it works briefly, but it has to come from inside of me, and that was the biggest thing.”
Now it’s onto the BMW Championship in St. Louis for the third leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs. I’ll be there tomorrow.
