NO KIDDING. If I heard it correctly on the golf telecast today, Phil Mickelson carried his own golf bag in an unplanned recent round at Torrey Pines, site of next month’s U.S. Open. It was part of the chatter about how Lefty is now in better shape.
Phil’s caddie, Bones, will be carrying tomorrow when the world No. 2 tries to close out the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial. Mickelson has the 54-hole lead, a shot ahead of Rod Pampling and Stephen Ames.

He’s in better shape than before, that’s true. However, the fact that TGC seems to be impressed with this “feat” is a sad commentary on how out of shape most people in this country are.
I hope someone doesn’t try to explain how large and heavy the PGA tour bags are in an attempt to inflate the accomplishment, or that Phil is now somehow more physically fit than most.
I doubt very much that he carried his tour bag. A tote bag weighs a lot less than what the caddies normally carry on tour.
Tom: You’re right, most people only carry their bag from the car to the cart, if that far. Sad.
Lancer: I agree. I can’t see Phil lugging a tour bag over those 7600 yards.
