BRASH, SWAGGER AND GAUDY BELT BUCKLE do not describe Australian golfer Geoff Ogilvy. No, Ogilvy lets his clubs do the talking, and they were speaking loud and clear this past week at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship in Marana, Arizona.
The unassuming Australian dispatched Kevin Sutherland, Shingo Katayama, Camilo Villegas, Rory McIlroy, Stewart Cink and Paul Casey to win the event for the second time. Not a bad week’s work.
(Oddly, the Katayama match was the one Geoff nearly lost. He would have exited on Thursday had Shingo not stumbled after having a 2-up lead with three holes to go.)
Ogilvy loves the desert and loves match play. (He’s 17-2 at the Accenture Match Play.) Oh, yeah, and he loves his Scotty Cameron putter, which helped him hole seemingly every makeable putt.
“The best thing I can say is that I enjoy this format,” he said.
Geoff got started in golf at age 7 when his dad gave him a cut-down golf club. He was a scratch golfer as a 16-year-old, and excelled in other sports at a local and national level in his native Australia.
Rising to No. 4 in the world rankings, Ogilvy is now one of the elite players in the world, although you’d be hard-pressed to get him to say it.

Are you saying you didn’t like the belts? Seriously, Mr. Ogilvy was amazing. He even motivated me to practice putting on my fake Persian rug again. Also, Mr. Cink’s last sink from the bunker was insane. Loved it!
