2008 Ryder Cup: Faldo Sits Down Garcia

HAS NICK FALDO LOST HIS HEAD? That’s what at least one British writer wondered out loud on the Golf Channel after Faldo left Sergio Garcia and Lee Westwood off the lineup card for Saturday’s opening matches.

Times golf correspondent John Hopkins said the media room was buzzing. I guess there’s a plausible explanation for sitting Westwood, who managed two halves in his Friday matches. The Englishman recently had tonsillitis and may have endurance issues.

But Garcia? Super Ryder Cup Man?

I missed all but the first two hours of Friday’s matches.

I was en route from Louisville to Virginia as the U.S. team came alive to take a first-day lead of 5 1/2 to 2 1/2. It’s been a long time since the United States has led a Ryder Cup.

American fans are surely gleeful, but this thing is far from over. The stars and stripes boys better show up with their swords sharp on Saturday. Mr. Momentum is a fickle fellow.
